Esther McVey, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, meets Women Into Construction

Ester McVey MP meets WiC

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Esther McVey, came to the Tideway London Bridge office to meet women who have been supported by Women Into Construction (WIC) into careers within the industry. Esther was impressed by the stories of the women and their enthusiasm for our industry, and was delighted to meet women in a variety of roles; carpenters, engineers, electricians QHSE advisors; all of who have entered the industry and progressed their careers through WIC. She also had the opportunity to meet several of the women working on the Tideway project, including a completely female project team, and one of their female crane drivers.

Esther launched the ‘Not Just for the Boys’ campaign with WIC in February 2015, and was interested to see the progress we had made since then. WIC have gone from strength to strength in that 3-year period, giving more than 700 women employment advice, over 500 women construction related training, and brokering 225 women into employment. WIC would like to say a huge thank you to Tideway for hosting the event.

Women Into Construction address All Parliamentary Group on Women

Kath Moore of Women Into Construction addresses the All Party Parliamentary Group on Women speaking alongside MPs
Jess Philips, Caroline Flint, Flick Drummond and Chi Onwurah.

Kath spoke about the under-representation of women in construction and related industries – and the importance of positive action and encouraging best practice – to support and retain women wishing to work in these industries. Speeches were followed by a lively discussion of the issues with a view to formulating a response to the government’s 2017 industrial strategy, which currently does not mention diversity.
